Square Apple Pie

Crust:

2 cups flour

1 cup butter cubed (Flour ration is 2 parts flour to 1 part butter.)

pinch of salt

¼ cold cup water or as needed

mush mixture together till combined & crumbly, make a ball, chill dough while preparing mixture.

Sugar mixture (to cover filling and top crust):

3/4 cup brown sugar

1-2 tablespoons butter (thinly sliced sheet to melt more easily)

2 tablespoons any lemon juice

dash of vanilla

pinch of nutmeg optional

Filling:

3-4 thinly sliced apples (I used 2 for shallow style squares).

Steps:

Grease the cake dish/ lasagne pan and dust with flour.

Roll out and line bottom of lasagne dish or shallow baking tin with pie crust.

Separate dough into two pieces to roll out into bottom liner and put aside some for top lattice.

Slice apples, spread as thick/thin as you like your filling.

Pour half of sugar mixture over the apples.

Roll our second ball of dough and slice thick strips to create lattice over the apples.

Pour out the second half of the sugar mixture over the lattice.

Bake at 350f for 30 minutes.

Take out of oven, use brush to baste the top crust with excess liquid that pools at edges.

Return to oven to bake for another 10-15 minutes until the smell is irresistible and let cool 15 minutes before cutting into squares.

In searching of square apple pie ideas (How could one make apple pie for 45 people?).

this recipe came up, which inspired me: http://frances.menu/apple-pie-squares.

This lattice was perfect, and the recipe helped me modify a standard filling and crust I tend to use.

Plus last year, I accidentally poured a mix of brown sugar and butter over dough and discovered strudel I think.

I hope you enjoy finding your own personal creation from these ideas! Love, C
